In October, Greystripe, a mobile ad network in San Francisco, published survey results on iPhone demographics, focusing on a segment they call the iPhone Mom. The report is targeted at advertisers trying to reach this new demographic through the iPhone, but the data starting me thinking about femtocells. I guess I see everything through that lense. I’m warped, I admit it. According to the Greystripe report, 79% of iPhone Mom respondents use their iPhone for shopping – and a substantial number use their iPhone at the grocery store. Their favorite application inside the store – grocery lists – what else?
You don’t have to be a genius to connect the dots from the iPhone Moms to femtocells in this scenario. This is a classic femtozone app. When the iPhone Mom walks into the store, the iPhone camps onto the store femtocell. The femtozone application then sends her an offer to download her grocery list and map it to the layout of the story. She clicks “yes” on the iPhone and receives a map of the store shelves and the location of all of the products on her list, plus alternative brand specials. Sound silly? Next time you’re in a grocery store ask the stocking clerk how many times they get asked the “where can I find…” question. And why wouldn’t Droids and BlackBerries, and iPhone Dads follow the same trends?
